Madame Butterfly

Małgorzata Malwina Niespodziewana
7-17 June 2013
Galeria M

We are pleased to invite you to visit Galeria M in Stare Jatki street, to see an extraordinary exhibition of drawings and tempera by Małgorzata Malwina Niespodziewana, titled Madame Butterfly.

What inspired me to create the works was Giacomo Puccini’s opera from 1904 Madame Butterfly, also Hokusaia graphics, Japanese comic-manggha, books, erotic art – Shunga, and my personal two journeys to Japan. Madame Butterfly is a love story – full of heroine’s sacrifice, her anticipation and Japanese sense of honor. For me, the most interesting part of the opera is the desire of Madame Butterfly to change her own identity (to abandon her traditions, religion, name), which sadly ends with her death. While working on drawings and tempera I mostly used the opera’s libretto (text) than the music, although, undoubtedly, the aria Un bel dì performed by Maria Callas was hugely inspiring for me. In my works I combine figurative drawing with abstract forms and motifs drawn from the Japanese design and comic. – MM Niespodziewana

Opening of the exhibition and meeting with the artist is on Friday, June 7, 2013 at 8 pm in Galeria M.
